Making A Great Fold.....

In my opinion being able to make a good fold is one of most difficult skills to learn in poker, even more so than making a great call.  Anyone can call down a bet from another player in the hope he is bluffing however, when you have a really strong hand it is much more difficult to fold that when your opponent has a slightly better hand.  Aces Vs Kings for example pre flop, how many of us can say that they have folded Kings before the flop when they have been re-raised by Aces!!  I know when I first started playing over 10 years ago now, I folded Kings pre-flop, I’m not quite sure what the other guy had as he never showed but these days I’m almost definitely never folding Kings pre-flop, at the end of the day even if your opponent has Aces and all the chips go in before the flop, you still have two Kings you can hit!!!

Anyway thinking about making a great fold reminded me of one of my favourite hands in poker which saw Roberto Romanello making an amazing fold, where he hits a ‘disguised’ full house and manages to fold to a bigger full house.  The beauty of this is that the bets are not even that big, and 95% of the time you are winning the hand with what he folds, take a look here..... AMAZING FOLD VIDEO

This was one of the occasions where a great fold was rewarded however, poker is not always so kind, here is another video which reflects what I was talking about before where Kings were folded pre-flop.  The decision was the correct one at the time as someone did have Aces, but poker can be a cruel game, see what I mean.....  Right or Wrong Fold

Folding hands also differs in a Cash Game Vs Tournament play, I think folding is far more important in a tournament as a good fold can keep your tournament life alive where as in cash you can always re-load either way though making a good fold is a very difficult skill to learn.

Darie Takes An Early Lead

Another great start to the fourth season of the Friday Freezeout, saw a heads up battle between the old and the new.  John “The Beast” Beadle and Daria ended up chopping most of the £2000 prize pool, with Daria eventually taking it down and landed himself at the top of the new league table.  Tania Festou has come into some good form also with her third place finish two weeks in a row, and with only 10 weeks to make it into the top ten form will be a factor in the race for the top 10.  Plenty of time for those who didn’t make it down last week, and with the prize pool over £2k every week it’s well worth winning.  See you at the tables.... PURE POKER CLUB.... We've moved again!!

When we moved our Poker room at the end of last year we wanted to be based in town however, the right place never popped up, we settled for The Earl Grey pub and although we have had some great nights down there, actually getting there has never suited all our players.  We always wanted to move back to town and from Friday 11th May we are moving to our brand new home in “Pure Nightclub”.
We have been able to secure the whole top floor of the nightclub, where we have redecorated the whole room, and with its own bar, toilets and smoking balcony, once you are in there you don’t need to leave.  Better still we have got our 2am licence back and to celebrate we will be having a grand opening night this coming Friday.  Hopefully you can pop down and check out the new room, and hopefully win some of the free prizes on offer, further details to follow.

Tight at the top!!

We are now nearly half way with the Season 3 of the Friday Freezeout, and looking at the top of the table shows how close the race for the 1st prize will be.  Only 4 points separate the top four places, and with 5 points awarded for turning up each week, anything can happen.
The top two places have been occupied by Warren Mudge and Craig Hartley pretty much from the first couple of weeks, I have slowly caught them up and sit in third, and now with Whippy getting two first places followed by last night’s 3rd he has jumped from nowhere in the last three weeks – which shows anyone has a chance of winning or making the top ten.  With two packages to the UK Genting Poker Series guaranteed there is great added value in trying to make the top ten.
Last night I was running pretty steady until I found Pocket Kings under the gun, after raising it up Sam Jackson decided to push all-in for just over double what I had put in there.  We had just seen KK vs AA and I was hoping it wasn’t the same, after I turned my Kings over Sam turned over KJ of Clubs so was absolutely dominated!!  After the flop of Q,Q,10 this not only gave Sam the up and down straight draw, there were two clubs giving him the chance of a royal flush draw, which he amazingly hit on the Turn, the Ace of clubs completing Sam’s Royal Flush!!  Mind you he was dealing himself, and I have seen him spending plenty of time with Shakey Joe the magician, I think I’ll need to check his sleeves next time!  In all my time playing I have only had one Royal Flush and that was on Joker Stars (Sorry I mean Poker Stars)
Anyway last night ended with a heads up battle with two of the games tightest players Phil “The Crippled Carp” Caie, and Charlie “Waterworks” Du Fue, with the waterworks finally taking it down with his pocket Jacks....

Full Tilt Poker deal expected to be closed next week

For those of you out there who used to play on Full Tilt, like myself, and those of you that have money tied up in there, like myself may be interested in the following piece of news....

Groupe Bernard Tapie is expected to complete its acquisition of Full Tilt Poker before the end of next week, sources close to the matter have confirmed to eGaming Review.

According to the article published on eGaming Review, Laurent Tapie of Groupe Bernard Tapie has already begun recruiting personnel in preparation for a re-launch, which he expects to take four weeks.

The article also reveals that the new Full Tilt Poker is not expected to go live until after the first anniversary of Black Friday (15.04.2012).

PocketFives.com reached out to Tapie lawyer Behn Dayanim today, who informed that when a deal is finalized it would be followed by a major public announcement.

The eGaming Review article does not, however, reveal if or when players will get their money back, hopefully this will be announced very soon!!

Poker Catch Up!

Ok so we haven’t had any updates for a while, were nearly in March now and this year seems to be busier than ever for myself with plenty of things going on.... anyway thought I’d give you a catch up!!

Most of you will know that at the start of the month we ventured off to the brand new “Genting Poker Series” with the first leg being held in Birmingham ‘Star City’ casino, it doesn’t have the glitz of the Bellagio but the poker certainly was very good!  Genting are relatively new in the online poker scene, and are on the same ipoker network as our very own UNCOVER POKER, but they have plenty of pro’s on there, including all the Hendon Mob who were all out in force in Birmingham, just to name a few.  Their huge network of UK casinos is made up mainly of the ‘Stanley Casinos’ and they are growing quickly adding places like ‘The Fox Poker Club’ to their portfolio.
Whippy and myself were joined by package winners Phil Da Silva and Jason Fraser, and with one place spare Jason’s brother Jamie joined us for our first poker trip of the year.  Overall it was a great weekend, with my birthday thrown into the mix it was always going to be enjoyable.
The structure was a good one, with 25k starting stacks followed by 1hr blind levels, which seemed to suit all the Jersey boys.  It was a 3 day structure and everyone made day 2, a feat that hasn’t been done before on any of the other trips I’ve been involved in.  I started day 2 in a very healthy position with 105k in chips, and around about 20th from a starting field of 350 players, mind you it quickly changed as in the first level I’d lost over 40k when my Pocket Queens got bust by a flush and My Ace King was bust by two pair after flopping the Ace.  With the top 45 getting paid I painfully went out 49th, with both Whippy and Phil being eliminated earlier in the day.
The real story was the Fraser brothers though, Jason making his first major UK event was playing very solid and after starting day 2 with about 60k managed to make the cash and eventually went out in around 25th place.  Jamie had started as the Jersey short stack for day 2 with around 35k however, that never stopped him, and after making the final day with about 15 playerS left, the final table was firmly in his sights.  Jamie’s chip stack had never been massive but he managed to stay solid throughout and after making it to the final 10 we thought he was on the final table.  After the dealer declaring it was 10 players he realised he had made a mistake and they were actually playing a final table of 9!  The poker gods weren’t on his side, and when he made a good call against a button push he had the guys 7,5 dominated with Jack, King however after the guy hit two pair on the turn it was all but over.  A fantastic result in the end but just a shame he was so unlucky late on!
The next leg of the “Genting Poker Series” is the end of March @ The Fox Poker Club London, so if anyone is interesting in joining us, let me know and we can sort something out......

The Friday Freezeout league with the new buy-in structure is proving very popular.  This week the prize money was over £2000 with £1000 paid to the winner, a great return for a Friday night out!  The league is only 5 weeks old so plenty of time for anyone to start building points and with two chances to win a FREE £1000 UK Poker package there is great value in playing the league.

See you at the tables

Friday Freezeout Season 2 Top 10 Decided

The final heat of Season 2 of the Friday Freezeout was won by Kleber, a big congratulations to him who seemed to be hitting hands all night I ended up heads up and he took me out to claim the final victory of the season.  To celebrate the final heat we also ran a FREE £100 Bonus for the best hand of the evening, Craig Festou set the scene for this very early on when he hit a full house with his pocket fours, only to beat this himself with Aces full of Queens, which we thought would maybe hold up as the best hand.  I already mentioned Kleber was running good and he was the man to beat him when his pocket Aces managed to hit a set on the flop, and to hit Quads on the river!!
The final league positions were all but decided bar the final 10th position which was sealed by Dave Corbel with his final table finish, here is the final 10 with a shootout to be played for a FREE UK Poker package worth up to £1000!
